Chapter 5"Go on an international trip, if possible. It’s fun and looks great on your application. I was able to get to Cuba for an “Exploration of the Cuban Healthcare System.” Not only was it informative, productive and a great academic experience, but I was able to drink Mojitos and hang out with a couple classmates. And I learned to salsa dance."

"One of the best things that you can do (if you know the field you want to pursue) would be to approach a professor/physician and do a research project with them. It can benefit you in so many ways. The most obvious benefits are that it shows initiative, interest, and allows you to develop a relationship with a faculty member who could write you a meaningful letter of recommendation. Any poster, project, or publication that comes out of it is just icing on the cake. Realistically, projects like these can be done over a period of months or years and therefore it is not a significant amount of time and can easily be done in the background of your normal work."

"The other aspect about the summer between first and second year is that it really truly isn’t the last summer that you’ll ever have. Look forward to 4th year… "
