Bonus: I started medical school with the intention of applying to psychiatry residency, and it wasn't until August of my fourth year that I decided to apply to emergency medicine residencies. Academically, my preclinical grades were solidly average (read: I passed but did not honor any preclinical coursework). My Step 1 score was 230, which was a couple points above the mean for the year that I took it. In my clerkship year I honored family medicine, psychiatry and internal medicine, I passed the others. That said, I had very strong clinical evaluations, which were reflected in my Dean's letter. I also honored my fourth year rotations, including my sub-internships in Emergency Medicine.

Bonus: Going into medical school, he had a rough idea of what he wanted to do. He thought he would end up in internal medicine or pediatrics, and perhaps something after that. Indeed, he always carried a soft spot for hematology and oncology. For better or worse, his specialty choice tinted his view of the rest of medical school. He struggled with internal, family, and pediatrics, before settling on internal medicine.
